hi all,

we are looking for a way to test if a client can mount an nfs export
from a remote server without actually mounting the filesystem.

the main reason for this is so we can monitor/detect issues on certain
nodes, and in case of problems, exclude problematic nodes from
workloads. we use autofs to control the mounts as most mounts are not
required at the same time but don't know upfront which ones are; so we
currently do this by actually mounting the filesystems (unused ones are
quickly unmounted by autofs). but this is a slowish process and we are
looking in other ways to test this.

another advantage of having such a tool would be to stress test the nfs
servers in preparation of or after upgrades (e.g. we just went from 1.5
to 2.2, it would have been really nice if we could use our production
nodes to test the mountpoints on the preparation testbed, without the
client having to actually mount anything.

i'm asking this question here since i assume that ganesha has some
(unit)testing tools to help stress test ganesha, and maybe they can be
used for our plans too.

many thanks,

stijn
