You can't build a fully working pNFS server based on VFS. The issue is
that the various DSs aren't communicating with each other, or with the
MDS, and so no server can tell what's written to or read from any other,
and consistency cannot be maintained. This is the part (the
server-to-server communication) that is provided by the clustered
filesystem.
It would be possible to write a proof-of-concept pNFS implementation for
VFS, where it's just assumed that the client does the right thing, but
this would corrupt data if there was ever any kind of error, so no one
has written this yet.
