Yes, I did have the email alert function activated. With that disabled,
I now get no notification but do see the following in the maillog:

Jun 25 13:01:09 munchies sendmail[30968]: l5PH19Vn030968:
munchies.net.cen.ct.gov [127.0.0.1] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN
during connection to MTA
Jun 25 13:01:09 munchies sendmail[30967]: l5PH19lK030967:
munchies.net.cen.ct.gov [127.0.0.1] did not issue MAIL/EXPN/VRFY/ETRN
during connection to MTA

This seems to follow closely behind the HW alert being fired. Other
mail from this system is fine, and when the send alert email action is
selected in the alert definition I do get an email. Is there some other
setting I need in the holt_winters plugin so it correctly communicates
to the MTA?

I suspect this mail sent not by holt_winters.pm plugin but something
else. Maybe "Action" is enabled on "Alerts" tab.
Mail from holt_winters.pm is probably lost. Check your mail log please.
