Hello Ewald,
To monitor such traffic, you first need to take into account how long you're
going to need the raw flows. I'm monitoring a network of 12 border routers
exporting a total of ~20Mbps of flow data with a server dual processor,
3GHz, 8G RAM and ~ 240G flow disk space. In this configuration I am able to
keep raw flows for about 3 days.
So, if you want maximum flow data, go for maximum disk space. The processor
shouldn't be an issue if you just want to collect and ocasionally look over
the flows. You will need a lot of cpu and ram power if you want to add
custom plugins to filter the flows automatically.
So, if you just want to collect, I would go with option 1; if you want to
analyze and quickly discard the data, I would go with option 2.
As for NFS exports, there are some problems with the locks on the nfdump
files. Look on the list archive to get more details.
Cheers,
Adrian
