Thanks again, Borja. I ended up abandoning the binary packages for my
core services on that box and installing up-to-date versions compiled
from ports. Everything's working great now -- I really appreciate your
help. Who knows how long I would've spent troubleshooting the problem
without your confirmation that perl 5.18 works.
