My landlord won't stop calling. Help me fight eviction.

Dear Mark,

Yesterday, the Center for Disease Control issued a national "moratorium" on evictions to last until December 31st. The CDC is finally recognizing housing = healthcare, a reality that I know better than anyone. I haven't been able to pay rent since March, and just this morning, my doctor told me that the stress and anxiety I am under is putting me at risk of a stroke.

This is why I'm so upset about the CDC "moratorium": it won't cover me at all. It won't protect me from losing my home.

We need New York State to do more. Click here to write a letter to your State representatives and demand they go back to Albany and pass the Emergency Housing Stability and Displacement Prevention Act today.

In addition to being far too short to make a difference, the CDC moratorium doesn't cover tenants without leases. In some cases, it asks tenants to waive their rights. It asks me to vow that I will pay all the rent I owe, in full, on January 1.

That's unrealistic and cruel. I lost my job in March, and haven't been able to pay rent since. I applied for aid from the State, but I didn't get it. I have no idea how I could make up all the rent I owe by January 1st.

Without a universal eviction moratorium and without clearing my back rent, this measure just kicks the can down the road, and doesn't address the crisis me and my family face at all. My landlord calls me on the phone every day, always with one question: Where's the rent.

That is why I'm joining with my neighbors and fighting for a statewide eviction moratorium that would last until the end of the state of emergency AND universal rent cancellation. Will you join me?

Click here to send a letter to your representatives in the State legislature, and demand that they pass a TRUE moratorium today.

There are less than 30 days until New York re-opens housing courts. The clock is ticking for Albany to take action. Stay tuned for more ways to get involved with our fight and win #CancelRent and an #EvictionFreeNY,

Sincerely,

Althea Miller
