As mentioned in a previous patch [0], here is a patch against http://hg.nginx.org/nginx-tests supplying the tests that check that proxy_cache_lock can be used when proxy_cache_use_stale is set to off.
There are two cases: Firstly when the upstream sets a 'Cache-Control' header, the response is cached for the specified duration. Secondly when proxy_cache_valid is used to define the cache duration.
