Thanks, I knew about those instructions but I was trying to "build it hte Debian way" :-( Found this page with some more instructions/hints: http://wiki.debian.org/IntroDebianPackaging but no luck.
So I guess if nobody can help me do it this way, in a few days I'll give it a try with the instructions you linked to.
