A solution I built for a client actually uses the ZODB under Plone as
the primary staff/volunteers database, and regularly exports data into
the LDAP server (every 15 minutes). They then use the LDAP server for
centralised authentication and authorisation, plus address books, and
soon mailing list management. My client has expressed interest in open
sourcing this work, although it would need some effort to make it
generic enough.

I don't know whether LDAPUF or PAS (which is the authentication
