I believe that VS shows the assembly version. I use this technique a lot, but only when working with windows installer. It is worth mentioning this is what developers deal with already, as this is how .net itself works, because you may have mscorlib 2.0.0.0, but you may be running .net 3.5 sp1 which has some fixes, and you won't know until you look at the file version.
