Because prepare_sql impacts every statement and you can't fine tune it (unless you tell me differently) and, although I didn't choose it someone else did, why shouldn't I have used Serialization - it's a valid mapping option after all and it worked fine.
btw I was mapping to an Image column and not a varbinary(max) - again, a choice made by someone else.
