The tests in the current trunk would indicate that this is not a problem, where both SetLockMode and ReturnAliases both function correctly. I needed to add a test to my local trunk tests to verify ReturnAliases functionality. This is probably why http://216.121.112.228/browse/NH-1968 is such low priority.
When I setup tests in _my_ project using VS2010, instead of VS2008, I am unable to get ReturnAliases to work at all. I am able to get SetLockMode to run provided there the hql looks like "from Person p", but if I try even "select Id from Person p" the error being discussed appears. when the query is run with LockMode.NONE it does not add the nolock hint anyway, but it may be running without a lock (I just cannot verify the lock state easily). In conclusion the tests in the trunk are either incomplete, or ReturnAliases and SetLockMode have a very restricted functionality that is not documented.
