tx level Serializable means nothing else can read/write that row. it's when you are most likely to get deadlocks. deadlocks are sign of query plan bottlenecks. I ran into this before. to resolve this issue I changed the query and applied indexing to the database. another option is to change the transaction level. you can configure Rhino to use any transaction level.
