I think you are on the right track! In 99% of all cases it just won't matter where you keep the mappings. Eons of man hours have been spent trying to keep things architecturally "kosher", for absolutely zero gain. Either way, concepts like dirty checking and lazy loading makes OR mapper loaded entities something you should be VERY careful to expose to unknowing clients.
Put the mappings where it's convenient and productive for you.
