Welcome to the club of the 650 nightblinds... Check the previous posts on this list with the keywords alternator or stator...
I already gave my conclusion on this list : riding a 650 NH at low speeds with the headlamp lit on a hot day will automatically kill the stator. Killing the stator will nearly automatically kill the old design Honda original (Shindengen as a matter of fact) rectifier-regulator. Sometimes, one or both of them get half killed... which is the worse situation for the owner : it was my case. I changed my regulator to an Electrex (UK) one. It's now protected against stator failures (fast FET on the output, current limited). After having tried different stators bought at low prices (almost all rewired and all faulty) I asked Electrex about it. They say : "send your stator, we rewire it, NOT TO THE ORIGINAL SPECIFICATION, WHICH HAS A COMMON FAULT, but to OUR specification". I did it and I'm now waiting for the new rewired and corrected stator. Once received and put in place, I will do two things : - Place a temperature sensor on or inside the alternator housing. This sensor will be used to cut the alternator's excitation or limit the current, in order to limit the temperature increase of the stator. - Replace the air intake cover over the alternator by a small 12 V air turbine (kind of model used to cool electronic components like CPUs). This turbine will be switched on by the headlamp of the bike. I hope this will definitely solve the problem. I will let you informed, gals and guys. Yeah... not so simple !
