Jeff, I would say stick with the OEM colors and use the same gauge wire. Taking a sample of the wire into a hardware store should be help matching that properly. And keeping notes of your work to pass along to a possible future owner wouldn't be a bad idea either.
I did one re-wiring of a motorcycle years ago but in that case I purchased a wiring harness that was already put together. I just needed to add ends and use heat shrink on the connections.
