When you shift there are a number of steps.  First, is the clutch lever:
disengage the clutch by squeezing the clutch lever; then firmly and
decisively push or pull the gear lever to select the next gear, up or down;
then release the lever.
It is hard to say if it was the synchro or the gear not fully meshed from your
description.  Transmissions are durable and Honda's gears are cut much tighter
than a transmission that uses 90 weight oil.  Remember, it is bathed in the
engine oil,  usually a multigrade of somewhere between 10 and 40 weight.  The
teeth are much closer together when they mesh because they can be, without
having to squish a very viscous oil out from between them as they come together.
Honda's transmissions are quite durable so the probability that something got
torn up is not likely, or you would hear it.

No. not up to those speeds. not me. I did have one of my nephews ride it for me
and he went thru all the gears for me and said he didn't see a problem. I've
been told that I just wasn't changing gears appropriately. What do you think?

Angela,

When you say you've had the bike out since hearing that noise, does that mean
you've had it up to those speeds again without hearing anything?

Hi gang,

Got a question. I was riding the other day at my highest speed ever (40-50mph
woo hoo!)(newbie ya know). Anyways I was changing gears and this horrible
screeching sound came out of the gearbox. I thought that I had destroyed
something in the bike for sure. I had to get off the road and when I eventually
slowed to a stop, the noise stopped. What did I do? Have I damaged something I
don't know about? I was able to ride it home okay with now problems and have
ridden it a couple times since with no problem. I just don't want a problem to
sneak up on me later. So should I anticipate a problem on the horizon or am I
just being overly concerned and should just chock it up to some error on my
part and the bike being extremely forgiving to newbies like me?

Thanks,
Angela
