The oil filter bolt was used on many Hondas and should be easily obtained from
salvage. When R&R the bolt use a six point socket to minimize damage. Remember
to place the spring and spring seat properly.
The lights dimming is you looking at a situation through the wrong end of the
telescope. The lights at idle are only as bright as the battery is good. Since
they brighten as RPM's go up, the charging system works. Stepping on the brake
at idle should dim them a bit more as the brake light is a considerable draw.
Your 300 miles since battery install is enough to make you rest easy. Seems
like everything is OK.
Enjoy.

Hi Everyone,

I recently purchased my first Nighthawk. It is a 1983 Nighthawk 650.
Runs pretty well, but needs a few things as any 25 year old bike
would. Mostly cosmetics, but also valve cover gaskets and has started
the cam chain rattle at 2500 rpm ( I understand this is common).
Looking forward to talking with all of you about these bikes. I have
always wanted a Nighthawk. I have two issues (for now). The first
is that the bolt that goes through the oil filter has been almost
completely rounded off and needs to be replaced. Just found out Honda
does not make it anymore. I am checking with a local motorcycle
salvage yard, but wondering if anyone had any ideas or knew of a place
I could find this part. My second issue is more of a concern. I have
noticed that the lights on the bike get dim as the rpm's drop to
idle. Just put a new battery in it. Is this just a traight of the
bike or is this a sign of something wrong with the charging system? I
had some starting trouble the first week, but a new fully charged
battery has solved that so far. I have put over 300 miles on it since
I put the new battery in about 10 days ago. Any thoughts would be
appreciated. Thanks!
