Jean-Pierre, I built my own crate (see: http://samadhisoft.com/2007/10/10/motorcycle-shipping-to-new-zealand/ ) but a good friend told me I really did it the hard way. He suggested that I should have gone to any motorcycle dealer who receives motorcycles shipped from the factory. I should have asked them if they would sell me one of the shipping crates and then I could have used it to ship my motorcycle - rather than building my own crate.
You are right. Central France to the central USA could, indeed, cost more than Seattle to New Zealand.
