Well, that clears things up a bit. The cover is coated and one of my co-workers 
removed the coating with a nasty solvent and polished it with semi-chrome. 
Looks fantastic but you have to buff it often. He did his fork bottoms too. If 
it doesn't leak, leave it on. Too much work.
Non-operational ? Does that mean you can't license it ? Bummer. That's no way 
for a good bike to go down.

Thanks for the response. It was only to get the cover off to clean up and 
polish. This bike has been registered "non-operational" here in California 
since 
Dec. '99. The odometer shows 11,000+ miles and I have no idea if that is 
correct. If it is anyway close, the engine shouldn't need any service. It did 
run when I bought it. Guess I'll try to do the cover while still on the 
engine.
