When it wouldn't, all lights, etc worked but only a click when I hit the button. Turned out to be a bad starter. To diagnose, when the bike won't start, put it in gear, and rock it back and forth to move the engine just a little. Then try starting normally. If it does (as mine did), it means a worn spot in the starter. Get off that worn spot and it works. End up back on it and it doesn't. So then you rock it again and it will. Solution was to have an auto electric shop rebuild the starter. $90. It's easy to remove/reinstall by yourself. Starts like a banshee now. Good luck, and my sympathies on having to push the bike 2+ miles. I had to do that once, and never want to again. But if I'd known the procedure above, I could have ridden home in style.
