Just for giggles, remove the caliper assy. and let hang by the hose. Push the
bike around and listen. I'm betting on the caliper making the noise. NOTHING in
a fork assembly should clank. If it has a slight amount of drag, the caliper
can click as it moves a slight amount. Before you put it back on, remove any
rust and such and lightly grease the slide pins/bolts that hold it on. They
allow the caliper to self-center. on some models you can set the clearance on
the anvil side by moving the fork tube on the axle. I haven't seen one of those
in years, so I don't recall if you can on that one.

Hi All,

Y'all were so helpful with my non-venting gas cap problem, I thought
I'd try again with another problem. As stated above I have an '86 450
with about 17k miles now. I checked the steering head bearings at one
point and they were loose. I tightened the bearings and they seem ok,
no notchiness etc when turning side to side with no load on. However I
do hear a knocking noise when the weight shifts to the front during
braking. I hear the noise moving the bik e around the garage, rolling
down the driveway w/o the engine running ( keeping the neighbors happy
@ 5:45 am).
The noise is a quick knock or two as I brake and usually as the
suspension recovers. If I touch the fork tubes at the clamps I can
feel a slight knock I think. Difficult to tell. The noise is also
there occasionally when turning from side to side with the weight on
the front end.

I'm thinking some play in the forks may be the cause but I'm not sure.
Are there any common problems that sound like the above?

Thanks in adance,

Joe in Altadena CA
