Not cork, but thin and rather fragile. And, yes, it's a Bi**h to remove from 
both sides (at least in my case it was). HotrodMamma.

Bummer, so the gasket isn't an o-ring type material? It's one of those
cork (?) flat type gaskets that leaves half of itself on one surface
and half on the other.
