Many years ago, when I was the Service Manager at Sears, we had a motorcycle
come in for service, and the owner wanted the timing checked - starting
problem, as I remember.. My engine/tractor/etc. mechanic - NOT motorcycle -
agreed to check it, using the service manual, which was very clear. But he had
never ridden a motorcycle, and refused to start with this one. When done, it
started and ran beautifully, and the satisfied customer took it
away..................... only to return angrily because all the gears were now
reverse, and there was no forward! The engine was 2 cycle, and the timing was
incorrectly advanced enough to cause the engine to "backfire" before reaching
TDC, and it ran backwards perfectly, thus the "all reverse/no forward gearing.
A stumper at first, but with the timing set correctly, all was OK.

Well you'd have to go forward cause NH's don;t have reverse.
