Hello Mike,

I live in Arlington, (near East Falls Church Metro) so our Metro DC gang is
getting bigger. (Though I can't help much vertically like you - I'm 5'5"!)

One of the first bikes I rode back in '74 was an SL 175- a friends, which
gave me the bug, so I went out and bought a Yamaha RD350 which I rode until
1990 when my first born showed up. We rebuilt that bike (the SL) a couple of
times (mostly the mill) and it had over 120,000 miles on it when my buddy
finally laid it to rest.

I too took a hiatus during my kids "high maintenance" period, but I picked
up a '92 Nighthawk 750 about 6-7 years ago, and try to get it out at least
once a week.

Hopefully we can get together with Javier and Jeff sometime.

Happy riding gang!

 Evan

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Maryland (and northern Virginia?) riders

 Jeff and Javier,

I'm a couple year lurker on the Nighthawk Lovers list (get digest to scan;
don't have much trouble with my two Nighthawks and don't have much knowledge
of them compared to others on the list), but I complete an arc of you two
gents across the top of Washington DC...I live in Vienna, Virginia 18 miles
west of Washington DC. Silver Spring's fairly close (25 minutes), Glen
Burnie's a bit further (nearly an hour).

I'm a reentry rider (3 years now back in saddle), once my kids were grown; I
commute by motorcycle most days spring-summer-fall and keep them rolling (no
layup) during winter, but only ride in middle of warmer weekend days in dead
of winter. I rode a Honda CL-175 from ~1970 to ~1985 (when my wife and I
started adding to the family numbers, to the eventual tune of three
children). Kept the MC license and rode very occasionally and mildly, but
stopped riding regularly or often for about two decades 1985 to 2005.

My 15 year old Nighthawk CB-250 is the ever-reliable, fuel efficient local
(ie to Metro/subway) commuter and errands machine. My 25 year old Nighthawk
CB-650SC is my longer commuter and weekend adventure machine. Both were
paid for by my commuting savings (and now those savings help pay for my
other steed....Shiloh, the 13 year old quarterhorse gelding...). The
commuting savings come primarily from the 'motorcycles park for free at
Metro stations' feature here...nearly $5/day, and enables government-work
Metro subsidy to actually cover expenses.

The 650SC ....love that shaft-drive and she has just the appropriate amount
of power and frame for my own 6ft 4inch frame and temperment (more mellow
than I was in my twenties...). Only real issues with her are....
1. age (bike's age, not mine...)....if things go on her, parts availability.
But she's been good.
2. anemic charging system....don't idle anywhere very long. But knowing it,
can adjust operations to avoid the problem. I keep a pigtail lead on the
battery for ease of charger hookup, but don't use it regularly...I do take
the charger with me on distant trips....just in case.
3. short range (~100 miles). Not a big deal for me, as a generally ride
solo, and don't mind a stretch every 1.5 hours or so.
4. I wouldn't mind a bit better mileage on it (ie ~55mpg, vice the ~40mpg
I'm getting). But still cheap to run.

Any other 'Hawk riders in my neck of northern Virginia?

Regards,

Mike
