I always reuse the original plug caps. They have a 5~10Kohm resistor and screw 
on. At the coil end, use silicone seal to keep rain out.

I did exactly what Dennis is suggesting  on my 84 700s (despite the
local shop advising not to) and it was cheap and worked great. Went to
a NAPPA store and bought good quality solid wire with staight boots.
All I had to do is measure trim and screw into coils.  Works great.
