Brian,

Your concerns aren't baseless just because you don't know what to ask. 40k
on a bike is good reason for concern. A LOT of things can wear out and,
depending on how the bike has been cared for, you may be in for a boatload
of repair issues.

Even those of us who aren't backyard mechanics can usually look a bike over
and tell if it has been cared for or not. The overall condition of the paint
and the rubber is a good indicator. Has the bike been kept outside
(excessive wear from the sun and the elements) or does it look like it has
had a permanent spot in the garage?

Check out the condition of the seat and the grips. People who LOVE their
rides usually can't abide having trashy stuff and will care enough to
replace them. Check the ends of the clutch and hand brake for signs of road
rash which would occur if the bike had been laid down. The foot pegs may be
another indicator of this. (Obviously, pegs and clutch and brake levers can
be replaced...)

Then, look inside the gas tank with a flashlight. (Don't use a match! [?])
Check for rust. This is also a good way to see if the bike has been cared
for or neglected.

Although a bike can be cleaned up, rarely will someone go to that kind of
trouble unless they truly care about their ride, and in that case the whole
bike has usually been cared for as well.

Let us know what you decide.

Paul
