This could be a bad starter, as happened to me with similar symptoms. 

Over time, you get a worn spot internally and when the starter spins to a stop 
on that spot, the next time you try starting, electrical contact doesn't 
happen. Move the engine and the starter spins to a new spot, not so worn. It 
then starts.? 

Confirm this issue by rocking the bike in gear next time it won't start so that 
the engine moves just a bit. If it then restarts, have the starter rebuilt. 
Most auto electric shops can do this. Cost me $90 for them to install new 
brushes and clean up the armature on a lathe. Removing and replacing the 
starter is easy. Two bolts and it's out.? Lube the O-ring with some oil when 
you put it back in.

The starter now spins like a banshee and the bike starts every time.
