At work I wash everything in a solvent sink. Kerosene will do. Use a brush over
an empty pan. Be sure to clean out the gunk in the grooves between the
contacts.  Dry would be best, just a tiny dab of grease in the end caps where
the armature spins. Getting the brushes in place may test you. Be patient. Test
it before you re-install. Hold it down with a foot and connect a battery to
test. They snap pretty hard if they work right. Sounds like you've made good
progress so far.

thanks dennis,

i was starting to miss your knowledgeable advice :)

anyway, what do you recommend to clean the starter of all the carbon
residue and dust...

and once i finish, should it be perfectly clean, or should it remain
slightly lubricated on the inside...

Thanks again

work area. Spread out a light colored cloth to work over.Disassemble VERY slowly
and write / sketch how it fits together and where all washers go. Clean all
parts before assembly. Getting the armature into the brush holder assembly is a
nice trick, don't get frustrated. It will help if you can use a large vise
to hold it while you put it back together. If the commutator is badly worn,
refinish or replace the armature.
