This may not be the route you are looking for, but it worked for me.
I have been cleaning up my 83' 650 and have had to clean up all of the
metal engine covers as well as the forks. That varnish they put on the
metal was starting to corrode. I used an automotive scuff pad made by
3M. I will have to check because I do not remember the exact name
right now. It took a lot of patience, but I just dipped the scuff pad
in water and started to scrub. Have to keep the pad wet to keep it
from scratching too much. This took all of the old varnish off the
aluminum. Then I went back with a metal polish made by Harley
Davidson and polished it up. Not as shiny as a brand new piece with
fresh varnish, but it does shine. These will now require a lot more
attention than they would with the coating on them, but they look a
lot better. Again, the coating on yours may still be in good shape.
Mine was clearly starting to corrode in certain spots and looked
terrible. This route is also very hard on the fingers! =)
