I have the Garmin Zumo 550. I bought the package with all options, and frequently switch it between my car and my motorcycle. Works well with gloves on, and if you have speakers in your helmet, or connect some earbuds to it, it will talk to you and tell you to "turn left in 1 mile" or whatever, so you don't have to always look at the screen. I bought a satellite antenna (extra charge) and signed up for XM satellite radio, and make use of it, both on the motorcycle and in the car. You can put music or audiobooks on an SD disc and play it through your garmin. It'll take up to a 4GB disc. Some people say 8gb and higher works, but 8GB didn't work for me. So I bring along a handful of 4GB discs when I travel. Music or Satelite radio or driving instructions come out the tinny little speaker on the car mount, or if you have an audio cable, you can patch it through to your helmet on the motorcycle, or plug it into the car stereo. I use the Garmin in place of an Ipod for my car. It works just as well. It's fairly easy to switch between bikes (I have two) and cars, so even though it's expensive, the one device handles all my needs on all vehicles. I'm happy with it. I take it with me when I travel, and use it in rental cars or while hiking around a city (battery life is about 2 hours, so I turn it on only when I'm lost). It will only play music when the thing is hooked up to live power, not while on battery power, so you'll still need an Ipod if you want music on the go.
There are entire websites and hundreds of chats out there discussing the relative safety or danger of listening to music while riding. I'll leave all of that to different forums. Another benefit or feature - I can sync my blackberry phone to the garmin via bluetooth, and thus can receive phone calls while riding. I use Autocomm for my motorcycle sound system, which works well for passenger-driver communication. I then plug the Garmin into the autocomm, which controls the speakers in the helmet, and I'm completely wired.
