Thank you for sharing pix of a place of great historical importance. Stuff like
this is wonderful and keeps this place from becoming a garage. I'm inspired to
take some pix of places around my locale for the rest of the members. I'll
avoid any quips  (cannon; used once, abandoned..) I have enjoyed my visits to
the fort at St Augustine and would encourage anybody in north FL or south GA to
see it. It makes a great ride too. St Augustine is the oldest European
settlement in north America.    I'm sure we all could enrich the rest with some
idea of where we live. Being a history buff, I'm grateful for your efforts.

Didn't get a whole lot of pics on the drive.  That is kinda difficult
especially at speed on corners.

The citadel is a fortress originally built on orders from Louis XIV.  It has
been beat up quit a bit since then.

The French love it because in the Franco-Prussian war of 1870 the Citadel held
out against the Prussians even after all the rest of France surrendered (big
surprise).  Prussians still whooped the French and the Citadel.

The Prussians left the Citadel in 1918 (huh).  They came back a few years later
with a swastika. Allies beat/bombed the crap out of the place and the French
surrendered the fort for last time in 1945.  In 1960 the fort was given back to
the townspeople.

It's now a museum with a "Garden of Peace" right below the southside walls.
The French are much better at sueing for peace than prosecuting a war so the
garden seemed appropriate.

Awesome countryside.  Awesome villiage; they really make great coffee and bread.
