We concur! Those snap rings suck. We'll do the silicone like you said. From
start to finish...hmm....already got the thing apart....LOL!. I can take
pictures if you want.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Re: Changing fork seals...
I just replaced the fork seal on an '83 NH 650 yesterday and have another to
do today. I put silicon on the aluminum tube so that the seal sealed on the
outside but of course not around the tube. I find the 650 NHs are the worst to
do when it comes to those seals.
I'd like to know how you do it - from start to finish,
Graham

Hey group...Bob and I are changing the fork seals on my Nightmare
Nighthawk. ('83 650 officially, 83,84 and ,85 unofficially). We pulled off the
dust boot to get the snap ring off. It was like the treasures of the Atochia in
there, nothing but old rusty metal. We were able to get one rusty snap ring off
and the other came off in pieces. We went to salvage another snap ring off of
my parts bike and, alas, same problem. We finally got another one off though.
My question is: is there any reason why we can't pack that spot with grease
when we put the bike back together? It just seems logical considering the
damage that moisture has done over time. HotrodMamma.
