From: oldschoolgwin <[email protected]> Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Timing chain tensioner - success at last To: "Nighthawk Motorcycle Lovers!" <[email protected]> Date: Sunday, September 20, 2009, 1:09 AM Well, just an update on the cam chain tensioner surgery. I finally got it "all" back together after waiting for viton o-rings that i failed to forecast i would need for the oil -pipe (uhhhh, JIS viton o-rings are never quick). Ok the moment of truth, turn the key, and it purrs like a kitten. No more timing chain going "clank clank clank" at 2800 to 3300 rpm, which is an rpm range I previously tried to avoid like the plague. I rode about 50 miles today and so far no hint of the chain making noise. Hope it stays this way. Incidently the tensioner spring (new one) has a spring constant (K=lbs/ in) that was 10 times the old spring, which I was not expecting that great of a differfence. So the new spring will will exert a force 10 times the old one for the same spring displacement (elongation in this case). The -010 version of the spring (new one) was a slighty different design than the original (assuming the one in the bracket was the original). So the end result was certainly worth it and I gained a substatial amount of experience at the same time. And a special thanks to Dennis Hammerl for walking me through all the many details - else the story would not be quite the same. Thanks Dennis! And when it rains it pours - now i get to do fork seals - actually I think this will be fun.
