Dennis H. Gave me some advice on how to sort it out and here's the results. <<...>> <<...>> <<...>> <<...>> <<...>> <<...>> <<...>> As you can see, the armature was pretty worn. I put it on my drill press and spun it. First, I used 100 grade sandpaper (only grade I had) and did the first three cuts. Then I took some Emery Cloth and buffed it down some more. I cut the sandpaper and the emery cloth into long strips just a bit narrower than the armature. So it was easy to work the strip back and forth as the thing spun. Then I took it off the drill press and fired up my Dremel and put a little buffer pad on it and applied some SemiChrome and buffed it with that for awhile. It buffed up nice. After all of that, I took the sharp edge of my pocket knife and ran it down the channel between each of the armature pads to clean out the stuff that was in there after the sanding and buffing. The manual tells how to check it with an ohm meter and I did that too and everything looked good. Putting it all back together again was a little tricky. I had, as Dennis H. advised, kept close track of where the washers were and in what order. But, fitting the brushes in and installing their springs and then working the entire brush platform back into the end of the starter motor were all head-scratchers for a few minutes. But, thoughtful trial and error and observation sorted it all out. I also put a little grease where the shaft spins on both ends and I was ready to put it back in the bike. That was tricky too. Things have to line up just right before it slots in with the screw holes aligned as well. But, it went in and I buttoned it down, reconnected the cable to it and reconnected the battery to the bike - and took a deep breath. Yes or no? I pushed the button and VAROOOM! I had a Nighthawk that I no longer need to push start. Yahoo!! Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking with it <smile>.
