Last year I was riding my buddy's pretty, shiny, pearl-white suzuki boulevard and had just passed behind an 18wheeler that was in the far right lane. I had moved from the middle lane to the exit lane when his left-rear tire exploded. The loudest boom human ears have ever heard as far as I'm concerned. I nearly jumped off the back of that bike. Then the chunks came, I ducked beneath the windscreen and managed to dodge all of them. All I could think about at the time was getting scuff marks on his pretty white bike. Immediately afterwards I realized just how luck I was that I wasn't on his left anymore. I have never liked riding near trucks in the first place, but now I give them an even wider birth.--

Most of that rubber is from truck tires. The high cost running a truck has forest trucks to use recap tires. Most of the time it works out good, but some of the tires do come apart. If you are to close tothe back of the truck when this happens its not going to be bugs you are eating.

My "survival" says: NEVER drive - car or motorcycle - so close behind anything that you can't see the road ahead and what is happening there, even if it means backing off and getting repeatedly passed, or speeeeeding up and passing. I got to have my visibility. I see cars "drafting" behind semi trucks oblivious to everythng. That will work 999,999 times out of a million; but that other one time........................... Real oblivion.......... I think it's interesting to see the shit other people get into, I just want to remain an observer.......----- Original Message -----From: Kyle MunzSent: Monday, January 04, 2010 8:46 PMSubject: Re: [Nighthawk Lovers] Sparks from cars...............I'll tell ya what it has to do with motorcycles. A starter motor to the face at 60mph will leave a mark. To avoid catching one you should never ride behind vans, especially sparking ones. Thanks for the PSA.

I was in the lane to the left and slightly behind a van several years ago,
and a shower of sparks started to come out from under it.....
intermittently,.... but lots of them, for a mile or so. I could see
something bouncing and banging. And then............... out from under
comes the starter motor! I always wondered how he explained the missing
starter after he got where he was going and turned the engne off............
and then tried to start it! I wouldn't believe his story, even though I
saw it!!!

My first car was a 1966 Chevy II - basically a 4 door Nova they just
called it a Chevy II because Nova's only had 2 doors at the time....
I was driving up I5 from the San Francisco Bay to Sacramento one night
and a really load scraping sound started with a huge amount of sparks
flying out the back. I pulled over and the exhaust was on the
ground. No wonder the car was so load and was hard to start….. I had
wire hanger in the back and used it to get the exhaust pipe off the
ground. I pulled off at the next exit and found a gas station with an
old guy working - it was at least 9pm. I told him my story and he
just laughed but told me to pull the car into the bay. Long story
short he used a coffee can and duct tape to “fix” the exhaust pipe.
It was still like that 2 years later when I sold the car for $300 –
which is what I paid for it. Great times and memories in that car –
perfect for a college kid.
