Some backround on the bike followed by what I have done to trouble
shoot I guess would be in order.
I inherited the bike from my grandfather who died last November, he
rode the bike right up till when he died. Due to him living in another
state and legal stuff I was unable to get the bike and get it in my
name till late summer. I didn't have a M license so I didn't get to
get it on the road before winter set in. I emptied the tank, removed
and cleaned the petcock, and filled with fresh gas and seafoam.
changed the oil, and cleaned an lubed the chain. I have been starting
it and buzzing it up the street weekly to keep the oil in the gear box
circulated. I thought that I was in good shape until I noticed that
the #2 pipe was cold on startup. Prior to this revelation I thought
that the bike required an extended warm up as it runs just fine once
warmed, I do think that #2 fires once warm as it runs very smooth and
has lots of power. I replaced the plugs, all except the #2 were clean
with slight rusty brown discoloration, no pits, no ash, no flakes ie.
normal, the #2 however had dry fouled with a fluffy black crud not
enough to bridge the electrodes though. I used a motion pro spark
tester on it and all wires can jump a 7mm gap with a strong bright
spark so I don't think it is electrical, unless somehow the timing
could be off. I warmed it up and ran it on the new plugs and pulled
them again the #2 did have some more black on it so I assume it is
firing at least occasionally otherwise it would just be white and wet
from fuel. I did a compression test on it (engine cold) and the #2
cylinder actually had 50
% more compression than the other 3. I ran out of daylight otherwise I
would have repeated the compression test with the engine hot. My
current thought is either stuck float needle. I'm looking for ideas,
I'm hoping to not have to rebuild the carbs just yet, I want to get in
a summers worth of riding before I consider making any changes, and I
can't see spending $100 for rebuild kits for the carbs and not re-
jetting them at the same time. I hate doing the same work twice! Also
I don't have the $500 necessary to get the V&H exhaust, K&N filter,
and the parts for the carbs right now due to Christmas.
