I was involved back in the days of powered hang gliders / dawn of ultra lights.

I had about 200 hours flying time in regular
aircraft, but that got too expensive at $80/hour, so I got a hang
glider.  The lack of proper hills and tows -
had to travel about 100 miles for a tow up - moved me on to adding a
trike/engine to the hang glider.  Had a lot of fun with that until a clown
with NO flying experience started his tandem ultra light and "flew right
through
the middle" of mine.  I didn't have the money to fix it and continue to
fly, so I sold it.

They say God looks after damn-fools and drunks, and
He sure looked after this guy.  He had some time as a youngster learning to
fly - don't think he soloed - and after a  30 year vacation from flying
purchased a full-blown trike ultra light.  55 hp, double my untralight's
weight and strength. He asked me if I might help him learn to fly, and I said
"only if I'm allowed to quit anytime I feel uncertain about you or your
equipment....."  Shoulda' never started.....  We were at a local
airport where I was going to fly mine first, and then have a trial flight in
his.  Being trikes, we park them tail to the wind and bungee the control
bar full out, which puts the trailing edge of the wing down and the wind pushes
the ultralight down against the ground.  The dumb shit used a hammer to
hold the accelerator down and started it.  When it started to accelerate
away, he jumped into it, and "went along for the ride"......... It flew through
my wing, trashing it.   Remember the bungee cord, tying the control
bar full out?  It was immovable, and he didn't know how to fly it
anyway........ It took of, with him in it, and climbed a couple hundred feet
up,
when the hammer fell off the accelerator, and with the bar full out, it
stalled,
made a 180 degree turn, and headed for the ground.  At about 15 feet, he
"bailed out", landed on his feet unhurt. His ultralight landed on the nose
wheel, which bent badly, but suffered no other damage.  My wing was
trash.  It was a Saturday, and I asked him, "Do you ever go to
church?  I think you should go tomorrow and thank somebody."  He said,
"I'll take care of your damage.  It was my fault."  But then reneged
and never paid me a cent.  Capital A ASSHOLE.  (I never got upset
about it, though............. ;~)

I'll find a picture and send it along
sometime.....

Gene

Welcome to another "youngster", from a
"more mature" Nighthawker.  I'm 74 and ride an '84 CB650SC,
except now in the winter in Wisconsin.  You will find a lot of
help, biases and opinions in this group.  Occasionally we're even
          right!

the "hanghank" is from my hang glider
flying days - until another guy crashed it, and I moved on to
          something more dangerous, motorcycles..................  (where
          other people can get you
          killed!  ;~)
