Original specs show 32 front, 32 rear solo / 32 front, 40 rear w passenger. My
preference is based more on feel than anything else. The Avons tend to "skate"
and push out for me at any higher pressure in front. Anything below 36 in the
rear makes for an uneasy feeling on a cloverleaf. I think that riding style and
rider weight would have a lot to do with personal choice. I tend to use the
front brakes quite heavily and work the front tire hard. I'm sure that lower
pressures would save my internal organs given our mine field road conditions. I
just can't take the heavy steering feel from a soft front tire. At least 80% of
the bikes I see have under inflated tires. You must not have too many "tar
strips" on the roads of NZ. A front tire at 40 should jar your fillings out.
Maybe OK on a bike like a CX500 that has a really soft front end. I set my
anti-dive at 2 and any more than that becomes downright uncomfortable. A tire's
cross section is affected by
tire pressure and the manufacturer can only suggest a range because of the
different rim widths will change the cross section as well. A pressure too low
and it changes during cornering and lower still, will change with each rotation
and build up heat. Too high a pressure and the side wall stops "working" as it
should. I seem to always dwell on low pressures because that's what we see most
of. I'd rather too high than too low. There's no harm in trying a range to
find what suits you. Glen mentioned his were 10lbs low. That's dangerous. The
sidewalls of some tires indicate a max inflation pressure. That's what should
not be exceeded to mount and bead that tire. Exceeding that can cause tire
structural damage. Once beaded, refer to owners manual. I like my car tires at
34 which is quite a bit higher than spec. I find wear to be more even at that
pressure. Again, rim width comes into play. Fitting a tire that is wider than
OEM makes for a change at the
tread face. The junkyards are full of cars with tires worn off at the outer
edges.
This is not intended to be anything more than an observation and personal
preference.

Subject: [Nighthawk Lovers] Tire Pressures

Dennis H.,

I saw where you said you run Avons and have them at 34 front and 40 rear.
I've got Avons as well and have been running them at 40 and 40 on my CB700SC
here. Can you talk abut tire pressure in general and what the trade offs
and such are with different pressures?

Many thanks,

Dennis G.
