No, it's the chrome tip sticking out of the actual muffler, but only if it's a
stock OEM.  I just took the mufflerrs off (my550), which were really cancered
out and pieces eaten away, and welded a resonator on each side.  It
wasn't actually loud with just one, but I like quiet; so,  I opted for the
second.

Interesting idea.  When you say VW resonator, isn't that the whole muffler part
of the exhaust?

I've done some searching & found some baffles online that may fit. They're only
$4  & "4 long.  Not sure if that would make much of a difference in sound.  I'm
going to check a few local shops to see if they have em' before blindly
ordering on-line

Not that I know that it will work on yours, but I used resonators from a VW
Beetle on my 550.  Two per side, only a dollar each.  Since I was friends with
one of the metal workers in the shop, he welded them on for free.  It was
quiet. That was like, I want to say, a '71 550 Four.
The reason I refused to purchase new pipes back then was because they didn't
last more than four or five months in Puerto Rico and despite that,  new ones
were like over $200.00.  A dealership right outside the base stopped replacing
them under warranty and convinced the owner to purchase a longer lasting
aftermarket exhaust.
He was losing money on the deal, factory reimbursement being such as it was and
seems to be still, according to what Dennis is saying.
Several others followed suit, rather than shelling out big bucks for a new
exhaust and getting tired of having to give up their bikes and riding time.
They did not seem to affect power either way.
I know it looked a bit strange, what with those skinny pipes and no noise, but
it worked very well...

I've looked for baffles, but the diameter is too large.  They're 1-3/4"

The end's of the pipe's are rusted, can't even get the small old baffles out.
(thought of fibreglass)

They're too big to even screw a lawn-mower muffler on the end's!

I don't like making so much racket like the local Harley rider's!

Any sugestion's  Team NighHawk?
