The ride on your SV should be no problem at all. As with ANY riding, stay hydrated. I travel with a Camelbak and am able to drink from that while riding even with my full face Arai. I have an SV set up specifically for solo touring and have done a lot of long range runs. Been to and through the Bay Area many times along the 101. I'd suggest that you allow yourself extra time and jump off 101 in San Jose and hit the 17 to take you through Santa Cruz and down on to Hwy 1 through the Big Sur Coastline. It's an EPIC ride. You can pick up 101 again in San Luis Obispo. I live in that area. If Santa Cruz is too soon, run down to Salinas on 101 then cut west to Hwy 1 near Carmel, it will cut out the Monterey Bay portion of the ride and put you on the scenic coast right away. Play with the route on Google, you will see the minimal time difference. Spring is a great time to ride through as fog is not typically an issue here till summer.
The worse aspect of the SV in my opinion, is the stock seat. If you're adaped to it, you're fine. I went with a Sargent seat on mine because after 20 minutes, I was done! I can ride fuel stop to fuel stop now which is usually a safe 130+ miles when my low fuel indicator goes on. Obviously, make sure your tires are up to the task and the bike is maintained properly...that's sort of a no brainer. Need any more info, just ask!
