A seldom asked question but a good one. First index the piece at the input shaft (some have dots) Or at very least, position it so at rest it is at a 90 degree angle to the connecting shaft. Now, using the adjustable ends, you can position the shifter higher or lower to suit. When you tighten the ends, make sure that you don't allow them to bind. The correct method it to hold them from turning while you tighten the lock nuts. When done, you should be able to jiggle the connecting shaft with your finger tips. If not, one of the ends has become bound (twisted) That sounds like what has happened. Done right, they shift rather well (Yeah, I know..Yamaha's shift easier) I've seen people make a real mess of this operation. You can block it from moving up or down, or bind it too tight to move. #Hint; the correct place for a shifter is right above your toe when your foot is on the peg, as it would be when riding. That may sound obvious but some don't get the idea of it being right where it should be.... I'll wait awhile to ride, too many potholes yet.
