I don't think Honda did the black on the engine for looks so much as it is a
thermal dispersant.  They  wrote a paper on that, some time back in the 70s, I
think.  It runs about 20º  cooler that way.  I used it, along with
plazmacoating of the piston crowns and cylinder heads, on every Beetle engine I
built.  They not only ran cooler, but used a bit less fuel as well.
Of course, they  also had a bit more power.  I also cc'd the heads and made the
combustion chambers the same size.  Well, off by a cc or  so, but balanced.
If I get a basket case 450, I will do it withthat engine, and add water
injection.  Will I ever max out the performance potential?  Probably not,
because I am an old fart and my reflexes aren't as quick as when I was young
and crazy enough to ride between cars at speed.  But it's there if I need it,
and in a harassment type situation, some fool in a car won't be able to catch
me.
Even a 250 is good enough to evade crackpots in cars, in town, if you know how
to use the gears.  My wife wanted to get a 50cc machine and I told her nothin'
doin' -  you can't get away from the crazys on the road.  You have no power.
You would have to get at least a 250, which I bought.  We both used it.  I
taught her how to ride, how to use the gears for more power to get away fast,
and the riding course taught her the rest.  And, how to fall and minimize your
injuries.  That part  they did in the grass, actual live training.
The bikes they used were - you guessed it - Honda 250 Nighthawks...

I love the old r/w/b scheme on the '86.  One of my favorites.  The
gold rims look good on your current ride, but I didn't care for what
the PO did on the '86.  The thing that set the '86 apart from the
other versions was the blacked out engine and wheels.
