I was in the Air Force as well and spent most of my time on a sand-bar island on the Texas gulf coast called Matagorda Island.   About 150 Air Force guys, a mess hall, NCO club, four barracks and a live bombing range - and about 60 gazillion cows.  Folks in the service sure know how to have fun.

I'm a farm boy.   My Dad has a 47-International that starts on a dime.  Although, it doesn't have back brakes.

I was in the Air Force and only went to the Mojave.  NZ sounds like nirvana
