Daniel,
Welcome from another noob! (who's name is also Daniel)
I have put a little over 2K on my '85 650 and I joined this group a
few weeks ago. Already, I have picked up allot of good tips from the
goldmine of experience that dwells here.
The thing about the brake pads jumped out at me. I put new pads on
mine about 1000-1500 miles ago. and at first they seemed kind of weak
and a little choppy ; I really had to clamp down on them to stop
quick. I had a hunch that they just needed breaking in. A few weeks
ago I went on an adventure in the Ozark mountains. Lots of big
hills... I made sure to give my front brakes a nice little workout. (I
didn't go as far as braking while on the throttle) But sure enough, on
the way back I noticed that my brakes were nice and strong and allot
smoother. So I would say it is true... they do seem to have a bit of a
break-in period (500-1000 miles?)
Dale's Idea of taking the "glaze" off seems like a good one...

PS. identical or fraternal twins?
I have younger twin sisters and they are as different as night and
day. they are best friends though.

Good luck with the tinkering.
