I wouldn't mind if it just had a lever under the seat you could control. Seems like it would make things simpler.

Just guessing, but would think same diameter guitar string or piano
wire might work, or something similar from a hardware supply house.
McMaster-Carr industrial supply (google for url) has thousands of
oddment fasteners. Might find something there that would fit the
bill.
