I thought the switch prevented you from starting in gear w/o the clutch engaged

The switch is just what allows the starter relay to kick over without moving the bike. If that switch is bad he's either shorting the two wires together or some other shenanigans to get it started. Very very simple switch to troubleshoot though, if it's not missing that is.

It looks clean & complete from the photos  -

BUT  -  The guy claims it needs a Stator (runs, but drains battery quickly)

ALSO -  Needs electric clutch switch? (doesn't disengage when clutch is pulled in)

I don't know about this guy's troubleshooting skills.  Isn't a Stator a pretty serious part for a bike with 14k miles?

It's a hydraulic clutch.  I thought the switch was to allow you start the engine in gear.

I'd love to upgrade from my  83'  550.  Mine doesn't look anything like an original.

This sounds suspicious to me.  Hope to look at it on monday.
