What is important is current (amperage). Check your stator through the
connector, once disconnected. You should find a low resistance beetween the
three pairs of yellow wires (three phased windings), and a ~5 Ohms
resistance beetween the white and the black wire (excitation winding).
Usually, this winding is fried : it's the genuine flaw on this bike. Taking
the stator off is easy : a couple of minutes. Ask a professsionnal to
rebuild only this central excitation winding if the others are OK. I
already gave the advice on this list to use high grade professionnal
insulated copper wire (to whitstand the maximum temperature) and possibly
ask the professionnal to use ONE point of gauge thinner wire, filling the
same volume of coil (adding more turns). This will rise a little the rpms
at which charging begins (from 1200 to ~1400 rpm) but will lower the power
dissipation in the winding, preserving it. Also consider puting led lights
on the bike, including on the front light if you don't drive at night. Also
consider changing your regulator for a modern (electrosport (US) or
electrex (UK) one : fried (even partly) excitation winding can make the
regulator fried in short circuit (no more regulation), which will fry the
newly rebuilt stator... ! Once all this done, enjoy your NH.

What should the voltage be when idleing an 83 650 at 2200 rpm. Mine is

Has anyone replaced a stator on the same bike? Is this a major job?
My issue is getting the bolt out first of all.
Thanks for your help.
