It's not so boring on a bike...with no windshield, 25-35 mile and hour winds hitting you, and it's getting dark and cold and no Ely. Add to that a 2.5 Gallon gas tank and a 1 gallon reserve and it's game on. I ran out of gas at an intersection with no way to tell how far Ely was. I put most of the gallon reserve in my tank. Doogie was riding with me on his Yamaha 800. He was freezing his junk off and we had to get there or be biker-cicles. We start out towards Ely again and the sun is getting lower. I run out of gas again and put in the last few drops. Doogies says "I'm O.K....my gas light hasn't come on yet. He gets on his bike, turns it on, and his gas light comes on. He says "F***" over and over. I say "Follow me." We limp down the road trying to save on fuel. Where the hell is Ely? Is this place for real? We go over the last hill...and there it is! It's still about a mile away however. We nurse our bikes down the hill and roll into the gas station. My bike says "COUGH" and dies. "Doogie...I'm out of gas." I said. We looked at each other and busted up like two frozen loonatics. The locals thought we'd frozen our brains out. We filled up. It was so cold by then that even our bikes were shaking. We went to the nearest casino/motel. It took an hour for us to feel our legs (and some other parts that we forgot about.) When we got up in the morning there was frost on our bikes. We went to the dollar store to buy more layers. We found out that : 1) it was 27 degrees and 2) that Ely had 8 inches of snow last weekend. We were not to see another bike for 600 miles. We were chased by a storm clear to the Idaho border and then the bloody thing just gave up. Total journey: 776 miles...not including all of the riding I did in 2 days in Vegas. Cost of my 49th birthday gift: $4995.00 plus plane fare. Cost of the journey home: priceless. I nearly killed Doogie and he's 20 years younger than me.
