keep an eye on your oil, it could run in there while sitting. You should turn
the petcock off when not riding.

There shouldn't be gas flowing through the petcock without the engine running,
Unless you apply a vacuum to it. If that diaphragm isn't behaving that could
also cause problems.

the weird thing is it does not happen when petcock is on reserve but when i

Hey if anyone is interested, next June there is a big bike show and cruise
in Pickens, SC that I think it would be awesome to flood all the Harley
riders with a big Honda/ Nighthawk group (just in case you want to ride the
wing instead.)

Back to the subject that was at hand before your thread was so rudely
highjacked:

Don't know if this will be of value to you, or if you can wait long
enuf. There's a guy who restores 70s vintage naked Goldwings and also
supplies parts for inline 4s. One of his vendor buddies has come up
with a mod that adapts late model spin-on filters in place of the 80s
model cannisters. It's a quality piece of tooled aluminum for about
$60.

http://www.randakks.com/

The website is closed to orders at the moment, since the owner's on
vacation. But he says he'll back and open for business on the 18th.

As far as battery chargers, I have the Battery Tender Plus, which is a
"smart" charger that "reads" exactly how much and what quality charge
to apply to a battery. It's foolproof and works like a charm.

it shuts off randomly when i am riding it. i noticed when i flip the
petcock to reserve it starts right up. i checked the plugs they are
fine.it hesitates on accelerates at times also.

Chris Besignano <[email protected]> Aug 12 12:53PM -0400 ^

Try riding it on reserve, only reserve to see if you experience the same
issue. If it runs fine then it sounds like you are starving the carbs due to
a blocked petcock tube. Take the petcock out and blow are thru it, maybe get
a rebuild kit for it while you have it apart.

Kyle Munz <[email protected]> Aug 12 12:11PM -0500 ^

That would be my advice too. I have pictures from when I tore down my
petcock on my site.

Ok, I'm going to take a stab at describing what my bike was like stock as it
may help. Mine stock when cold would require riding with the choke on for
roughtly 5 minutes, or at idle for minimum 15 minutes. Otherwise it would
stumble on accelleration, if it was really cold outside <50 degrees F I
might not take it off the choke at all. If it was cold I could not twist the
throttle quickly or it would shut off. Could it just be that the engine is
not warm enough? Also I had an inline fuel filter for a while that was
pinching the fuel line. I didn't pinch it enough to cause any issues until I
attempted extended highway riding, it would just run out of gas and shut
down. When I pulled over the float bowls would fill up and away I'd go until
it shut down again. so check you're fuel line for sharp bends, the stock one
is molded and a PO could have replaced it with a straight line that
restricts flow. Lastly if your bike is really rich it could shut off when
you come to a stop, or hesitate when you start off from a stop. A rich
running engine just feels like it looses power as the engine warms up, or on
a hot day. A lean engine will stumble on acceleration. Hope that helps
somewhat, the only thing else I could add would be some sort of an
electrical issue like on the key switch, the kill switch, bad ground on the
engine, something that is affected by vibration which fixes its self when
you come to a stop.

I had this problem on my 550. My brother took the cdi box apart and did some re
soldering and sealed it back up and I'v had no problems now.

Unfortunately in the course of preparing the bike for daily driving
use, my starter chain has broken. This requires the tearing down of
the engine, so this project has ended too soon.

I am parting the bike out in total. There are alot of good deals to be
had, since I am checking ebay and generally asking half of what the
ebay market price is. Thanks you all for the warm welcome!

That sounds like my kind of fun! The kind of fun that I don't wish upon
anybody though.
